Summary: Purpose: To show visual outcomes and complications of urgical treatment methods concerning pathological processes present in corneal endothelial dystrophy.
Material and Methods: To show changes observed in cornea in Fuchs dystrophy and methods of treatment literature retrieved from Pubmed Library search was analized.
Discussion: In Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy visual acuity deterioration with time is caused by progressive loss of corneal endothelial cells and Descement’s membrane thickening. Corneal transplantation is currently first choice method used to restore vision. Lamellar keratoplasty gives new perspective in operative treatment.
Conclusions: Final visual acuity outcomes are quite similar although visual stabilization is observed later after penetrating keratoplasty with higher astigmatism and complications. Failures in endothelial keratoplasty partly depend on surgeon experience but the frequency after operation itself is lower than in penetrating keratoplasty. Due to these facts lamellar keratoplasty is currently preferred method for surgical treatment.
