Refractive Errors and Amblyopia Risk Factors in Patients with Intellectual Disabilities – Based on a Screening with Plusoptix A09 Photoscreener

Summary: Purpose: An attempt of evaluation of refractive errors and amblyopia risk factors in patients with intellectual disabilities, in whom standard ophthalmological examination may be difficult or impossible.
Material and Methods: Two hundred and forty-eight people with intellectual disabilities were screened with the Plusoptix A09 Emily photoscreener (Plusoptix Gmbh, Nürnberg, Germany). The results were used in detection of refractive errors and amblyopia risk factors: anisometropia and asymmetry in eye alignment.
Results: Reliable refractive error measurement was possible to conduct in 98.4% of patients. Significant refractive errors were found in 60.6% of screened people. Anisometropia was detected in 52 people and amblyopia suspicion – in 70. The autorefractometer found asymmetry in eye alignment in 8.5% of patients.
Conclusions: The use of the Plusoptix photoscreener in examination of people with intellectual disabilities may help in assessment of refractive errors, especially in those patients, who do not cooperate in the standard ophthalmological examination or in patients with no contact.
