Summary: Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the connective tissue leading to reduction of secretory functions of salivary and lacrimal glands. The disease has two main forms: primary and secondary Sjögren's syndrome. The etiology and pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome are still unclear. The most frequently detected autoantibodies in patients with Sjögren's syndrome are anti-Ro and anti-La. Ocular manifestations of Sjögren's syndrome are associated with lacrimal glands destruction.
In each patient with severe form of dry eye syndrome Sjögren’s syndrome should be suspected or diagnosed. During evaluation process following tests should be perfromed such as anti-Lo, anti-Ra, RF and ANA antibodies presence. Even, when the result for anti-Ro and anti-Lo antibodies presence test results is negative, but patient has symptoms of severe dry eye syndrome and positive test results for RF and ANA antibodies, further diagnostics should be performed.
Promising possibilites give stripe tests use in diagnostics, since they can be performed quickly, easy and typically in office during visit.
