Summary: Meibomian glands are sebaceus glands located in the tarsi of the upper and lower lids. Their role is to produce a lipid-protein secretion responsible for a number of important functions such as: stabilization of the tear film, appropriate level of evaporation and surface tension and provision of smooth optical surface. Activity of Meibomian gland is correlated with functional condition of other accessory organs of the eye: eyelids, conjunctiva, lacrimal gland. In this paper the authors discussed function and structure of Meibomian glands which correlates with anatomy and histology of the ocular adnexae.
