Summary: Purpose: Identification of styles of coping with stress preferred by patients hospitalized due to a senile cataract extraction.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted among 50 patients (25 women and 25 men) hospitalized in the Department of Ophthalmology Medical University of Lodz. The study used the questionnaire constructed for the purpose of this survey and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations.
Results: The style of coping with stress of most of the patients was task-oriented. In the study group the marital status was a factor which affected results of the emotion-oriented coping style. The patients’ age positively correlated with the emotion-oriented style and negatively with the avoidance-oriented coping style.
Discussion: Styles of coping with stress in a disease can be less or more adaptive. The identification of the dominant style and the patients who are characterized with a non-adaptive style will improve the quality of ophthalmological care before the senile cataract surgery.
Conclusions: 1. Patients hospitalized due to senile cataract extraction prefer the adaptive style of coping with stress. 2. Older patients, living without their partners, are less able to cope with stress in the course of time. 3. Elderly patients with senile cataract should be particularly provided with professional care aimed at learning methods of coping with stress. 4. Nurses should give more emotional and informative support to patients of ophthalmology departments.
