Summary: Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized by progressive and irreversible optic nerve damage, which results in characteristic visual field defects and complete vision loss at the end stages. An estimated 40–50% of nerve fibers may be lost before the functional visual field loss occurs, so the early diagnosis is important in order to prevent severe vision loss. Methods, which allows for early detection of glaucoma are: optical coherence tomography, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II and GDx scanning laser polarimetry. Each of these techniques uses different technologies and light sources to characterize the distribution of retinal nerve fibre layer and/or optic disc topography in order to detect those with early glaucoma from a group of suspected glaucoma patients.
The average retinal nerve fibre layer of optical coherence tomography, the Moorfields regression analysis classification from Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II and the nerve fibre indicator from GDx analysis have been demonstrated to provide good discriminatory ability between healthy and glaucomatous eyes. Despite optical coherence tomography, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II, GDx have many advantages, there are some limitations dependent on various factors, including: operator skills, image quality, quality of image analysis, individual anatomical variability and pathologies of ocular structures.
This article provides a concise and comprehensive review of the literature on the methods used in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of glaucoma in clinical practice: the optical coherence tomography, Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II, GDx scanning laser polarimetry.
