Summary: Purpose: The aim of this paper was to present the pathological aqueous humor formation and outflow in glaucoma, based on the most important studies on outflow function.
Material and Methods, Discussion: Elevated intraocular pressure is the major risk factor for glaucoma and lowering this pressure is the only effective prevention of glaucomatous progression. The intraocular pressure is determined by dynamic balance between production and outflow of the aqueous humor. In this paper the outflow pathway and outflow resistance were described. The authors of this paper summarized the role of Schlemm's canal, pore density and giant vacuole in aqueous outflow.
Conclusions: Despite large number of histological investigations, the mechanism and locus of increased outflow resistance remain unclear.
