Evaluation of Visual Function and Complications after Cataract Surgery with Monofocal Acrylic MBI Lens Implantation

Summary: Purpose: To evaluate visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and complications after cataract surgery with intraocular lens MBI SAL302AC implantation.
Material and methods: The study analyzed 34 eyes with uncomplicated senile cataract surgery with implantation of acrylic, monofocal, one­piece, hydrofobic, aspheric lens­MBI SAL302AC. Postoperative distance/near uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity (logMAR), contrast sensitivity with and without glare, complications and patient satisfaction were analyzed. The follow-up period was six months.
Results: Six months after surgery uncorrected and best corrected distance visual acuity significantly improved (uncorrected: preoperatively 0.63; postoperatively 0.12, p<0.0001; best corrected: 0.33 preoperatively, postoperatively 0,02, p<0.0001). Near visual function was: uncorrected preoperatively 0.76, postoperatively 0.38, p<0.0001; best corrected 0.52 preoperatively, postoperatively 0.17, p<0.0001. There were no statistically significant differences between planned and final refraction (Δ=0.39 D, p>0.05). Posterior capsule opacification requiring Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy were observed in 3/34 eyes (8.8%). Uncorrected photopic contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000) was within the normal limits. Glare/halo phenomenon was not observed. All patients were satisfied after surgery.
Conclusions: These preliminary results suggest that the implantation of MBI SAL302AC intraocular lens is a safe and effective procedure. This conclusion has to be confirmed by further studies.
