Summary: Mite of Demodex can be a potential factor in different etiological disorders of the eyes and skin. The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of Demodex in the hair follicles of eyelashes and their potential participation in the emergence of discomfort in people who work at computers. Studies carried out in a group of 76 individuals working at the computers (28 with the emerging discomfort and 48 without discomfort) clearly indicate the existence of relationship between the infestation with D. folliculorum and/or D. brevis and the appearance of symptoms in the form of burning, piercing, feelings of fatigue, feeling of grit under the eyelids (feeling foreign body under the eyelids), itching, redness, lacrimation, feelings of dryness in individuals working at the computers. There is, therefore, justified need to checkup whether in the human population (for example, the patients in Poland) the infestation with Demodex may be a factor of discomfort appearing in people working at the computers. Confirmation of a positive correlation of Demodex-discomfort when working at the computer provides further evidence for the pathogenic role which is performed by these mites in the development of ocular diseases and hindrance at work with display screen equipment.
