Summary: Layer scanning with utilization of interferometry of partly coherent light, often called optical coherence tomography is widely used for ocular diseases diagnosis. It can provide in vivo visualization of the eye. Two optical coherence tomography platforms have been developed: time-domain and Fourier (or spectral)-domain. Spectral optical tomography almost completely superseded time-domain system by offering faster acquisition times and higher resolution of images. With technology using optical coherence tomography with swept-source laser prototype (one of the methods of Fourier) the scope of potential applications for the device significantly increased allowing, among others, obtaining topographical maps of the front and back surfaces of the cornea, as well as the use of this technology to contact lenses metrology in liquid solution. The main advantages of this kind of tomography over the spectral optical tomography are: greater speed imaging, less sensitivity roll off with range, and greater imaging depth ranges deep into the tissues. Current papers were analyzed and the versatility of the multi-purpose use of optical coherence tomography in contactology was demonstrated. Development of optical coherence tomography leads to increased applicability of this technology as a diagnostic tool in contact lens research. New practical applications were described too. Moreover, the optical coherence tomography with extended scan and depth and width may open a new field in studying contact lens design.
