Summary: Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to describe orthokeratology procedures as well as to evaluate the efficacy of ortho-K as vision correction method in pediatric patients and as a method for myopia control in clinical practice.
Material and methods: Several cases of correction in pediatric patients with different degrees of myopia using overnight orthokeratology with R-R Ortho-K lenses were analyzed. The evaluated parameters included topography maps (before and after orthokeratology), visual acuity and myopia control based on the maintenance of constant ortho-K lens parameters. The follow-up period was from one to four years.
Results: All subjects have achieved VA level of 1.0 with baseline refractive errors ranging from -3.00 to -8.25. The error has stabilized which was confirmed by the use of the same ortho-K lens parameters with no need to adjust them throughout the follow-up period, which suggests that myopia did not progress. No complications were observed as a result of ortho-K application.
Conclusions: Orthokeratology is safe and effective method of myopia correction with refractive errors up to -4.50 Dsph and -2.50 Dcyl. In certain cases even higher myopia may be effectively corrected. Orthokeratology is also an effective tool for myopia control. During the follow-up period it was not necessary to adjust the ortho-K lens parameters which suggests that the error has stabilized. The authors’ observations are consistent with the available publications which confirm the efficacy of orthokeratology in myopia control based on the results of randomized clinical trials.
