Summary: Introduction: Trachoma is an ocular infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. At first it appears to be an acute conjunctivitis. Lack of treatment and recurrent infections cause complications such as conjunctival and corneal scarring, which in consequence leads to blindness. Trachoma occurs endemically in poor areas which low hygiene and reduced access to medical care. Despite the fact that trachoma is a curable disease, it is presumed to be the leading cause of blindness in the world.
Objective: To indicate current recommendations, methods of treatment and prevention of trachoma, particularly SAFE programme recommended by World Health Organization. Material and methods: Review and analysis of medical literature.
Results: Simultaneous implementation of mass antibacterial therapy, surgical treatment and improvement of sanitation constricts diffusion of trachoma and eliminates it in the long term. Conclusion: Trachoma still is a big, global-scale problem that cannot be solved by endemic countries themselves. Help in a form of integrated and multidisciplinary operations will lead to reduction of trachoma occurrence and elimination of trachoma blindness.
