Summary: Retinal artery occlusion may be the first symptom which evidences the presence of cardiovascular disease. At present, cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death. The awareness of a close relationship between retinal artery occlusion and the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases poses a challenge for an ophthalmologist which is a profound, extended diagnostics based on interdisciplinary cooperation. The goal of diagnostics should be to seek sources of embolic material, concomitant diseases, as well as evaluation of cardiovascular risk factors, the presence of which considerably increases the frequency of thromboembolic events. Properly performed diagnostics provides an opportunity to appropriately diagnose patients, implement proper treatment and, consequently an attain the goal which is reduction of the risk of the subsequent thromboembolic event, and an improvement of prognoses from the aspect of these patients survival.
