Summary: Every day human is exposed to many substances, which affect his health. Risks may be connected with basic activities such as breathing and eating. The additional risk factor sometimes is the industrialization of the region, place of livinig, occupation. This "invisible" influence on human body have for example heavy metals. The aim of this paper is to define the term "heavy metal", create a brief characterization of the elected representatives of this group and to show what impact they have on the human body and the individual organs. Metal toxicity is the result of their accumulation in the body, mainly in the kidney, liver and central nervous system. Ocular symptoms are induced by excess of metals in the body or local action of elements and their compounds. Although this is a very current topic it has so far not been properly examined, when it comes to the consideration of heavy metals on the visual system.
