Summary: Keratoconus is a quite frequent type of ectasion, which causes are both genetical and environmental. It occurs mainly in young patients and leads to myopia and astigmatism increase. It coexists with different diseases especially atopy which leads to eye rubbing – the main cause of keratoconus progression. Diagnosis of keratoconus in it’s early stages is not easy and availability of advanced diagnostic equipment is insufficient. Keratoconus treatment depends on progression stage and patient’s age. Cross-linking is an effective method which stops keratoconus progression and helps to avoid keratoplasty in many cases.
