Summary: Microperimetry is a noninvasive examination method enabling central vision assesment. Central retinal sensitivity measurement is combined with fundus photography. Due to eye-tracking mode, the method does not require a patient to have a stable macular fixation. Data provided by microperimeters can be used in the early diagnosis of macular retinal diseases, such as the age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema or central serous retinopathy. Microperimetry shows a high sensitivity in the localization of tiny central scotomas caused by drusen or pigmentation disturbance in the pigment epithelium. In the case of diabetic macular edema, retinal sensitivity corelates with the presence of intraretinal fluid and the diameter of cysts. Microperimetry has proved to be a reliable method to predict subretinal leakage’s persistence in serous retinopathy. In all the diseases mentioned above, microperimetry facilitates monitoring of disease progression and treatment-outcome evaluation. Patients with advanced stage of age-related macular degeneration are likely to benefit from the rehabilitation method, which employs microperimeters and aims to establish fixation in a new localisation on the retina – in the places uninvolved by the disease; therefore, the best possible exploitation of the residual visual function.
