Summary: Purpose: To report efficacy and safety of intravitreal aflibercept therapy in patients who were diagnosed with neowascular age-related macular degeneration and registered to drug prescription program, during their first year of treatment.
Methods: Retrospective review of 54 patients including 31 women (57.41%) and 23 men (42.59%) suffering from age-related macular degeneration. All patients received 3 doses of 2.0 mg intravitreal aflibercept every 4 weeks. After 3 monthly injections patients were treated with intravitreal injections of 2.0 mg aflibercept every 8 weeks. All patients were followed-up continuously with visual acuity charts and optical coherence tomography imaging (central retinal thickness).
Results: Best corrected visual acuity during screening was significantly reduced (mean from 0.37 to 0.45). Furthermore, the central retinal thickness (mean from 540.15 µm to 334.10 µm) was also reduced after treatment.
Conclusion: Intravitreal aflibercept injections reduce the central retinal thickness during first months of treatment and also significantly improves the visual acuity.
