Early Outcomes of Naive Patients Treated with Aflibercept in the Proactive Schedule of the Polish National Health Fund Drug Prescription Program – Preliminary Results

Summary: Aim: The aim of this study is to present the early results of treatment of patients with neovascular form of age-related macular degeneration treatment-naïve and qualified for proactive aflibercept treatment regimen in National Health Fund Drug Prescription Program.
Material and methods: This paper presents the early results of treatment of 25 naive patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Due to the presence of neovascular membrane patients were enrolled to receive intravitreal 2.0 mg/ 0.05 ml aflibercept as a part of the National Health Fund Drug Prescription Program. Patients eligible for the visit and follow-up visits underwent full ophthalmological examination (visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, evaluation of anterior segment and fundus) and had spectral domain optical coherence tomography and angio optical coherence tomography.
Results: In patients after 6 months of treatment we observed improvement in average visual acuity, regression of retinal and choroidal parameters in spectral domain optical coherence tomography (decrease in average foveal thickness and the average subfoveal thickness of the choroid), resorption of fluid from the neurosensory retina or pigment epithelium detachment and retinal edema reduction.
Conclusions: The intravitreal administration of aflibercept therapeutic dose in the case of choroidal neovascularization in the course of age-related macular degeneration in the scheme proposed in the context of the drug prescription program results in the eyes of previously untreated patients after 6 months of therapy improvement in functional parameters as well as the objective of morphological parameters evaluated by spectral domain optical coherence tomography.
