Summary: Purpose: Analysis and comparison of some epidemiological features of patients operated for senile and presenile cataract at our department in years 2003 and 2013.
Material and methods: The data were based on case histories. The whole examined group consisted of 400 patients operated in 2000 and 403 patients operated in 2013. The analyzed data included: age, gender, place of living, type of cataract, duration of cataract symptoms before the surgery, preoperative vision acuity, coexistence of diabetes, cardiac insufficiency and hypertension.
Results: The mean age of patients in 2003 was 75.1 years vs. 76.1 in 2013, and no statistically significant difference was found. It was proven that more patients from cities underwent surgery in 2013 (361) than in 2003 (322). Cortico-nuclear and cortical type of cataract was diagnosed more often in 2013 than in 2003, 19% and 9% more respectively. Significantly better preoperative visual acuity (7.9% more patients with vision acuity > 0.75 in 2013) and more patients with coexisting hypertension (56% vs. 74%) and cardiac insufficiency (34.7% vs. 51.61%) were noted.
Conclusions: Number of patients operated for cataract is increasing due to the population ageing. Comparing groups of patients from years 2003 and 2013 we have observed increase in the number of women and patients from the cities. There is a tendency to perform surgery on patients with better preoperative acuity. Significantly longer period was observed between diagnosis and the surgery (97.2 days in 2003 vs 518.3 days in 2013).
