Summary: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a major ophthalmic problem in the population. Risk factors for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment include: posterior vitreous detachment, myopia, cataract surgery, YAG capsulotomy, eye trauma and systemic diseases. The frequency of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment depends on the region of the world. Increased frequency of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment has been observed in men, especially in the sixth and seventh decades of their life and during the summer months. We present selective review of the literature about epidemiology of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
