Teleglaucoma – New Possibilities in Glaucoma Management

Summary: The American Telemedicine Association defines telemedicine as the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve the health status of a patient. Telemedicine technologies allow clinicians to remotely diagnose, manage and monitor several conditions from a distance. The majority of the current teleophthalmology services concentrate on patient screening and appropriate referral to experts. There are successful programmes running in several areas of the world, especially in rural regions, where there is the lack of specialists. Telemedicine services has been successfully developed in screening for diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. Teleglaucoma is a screening and diagnostic tool for glaucoma. It uses stereoscopic digital imaging of the optic nerve head as well as perimetry, pachymetry and intraocular pressure results that are transmitted electronically to an ocular specialist for further diagnosis and management. The combination of examinations and equipment required can vary based on organizational resources and target populations’ screened. However, the more diagnostic tools used during screening for glaucoma the greater the accuracy and effectiveness of the screening process. The advantages reported in the literature include convenience, decreased travel time to medical clinics, increased access to specialized care for glaucoma, and decreased patient costs. Teleglaucoma serves as a tool for early detection of glaucoma.
