Summary: In March 2016 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommendations for screening the patients treated with antimalarial drugs were updated in order to increase the effectiveness of ophthalmological adverse effects in those patients. The importance of 10-2 automated visual field was confirmed. However, it is recommended to verify the obtained outcomes in at least one objective examination – spectral domain optical coherence tomography, multifocal electroretinography or fundus autofluorescence. Additionally, the existing scheme of screening tests was supplemented by modern techniques, such as microperimetry and adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope. The latest test results of research revealed differences in the location of chloroquine retinopathy lesions depending on the race which should be taken into account when choosing the research methods. Extending the indications to using antimalarial drugs requires ophthalmologists to update their knowledge on prophylaxis of ophthalmological complications and screening recommendations in this group of patients.
