Summary: Tuberculosis is one of the most widespread infectious diseases in the world. Due to the presence of mycobacterial multi-drug resistance, it requires several months of therapy combined with several antibiotics. Ethambutol is a first line antituberculosis drug, the most serious adverse effect of which is toxic optic neuropathy. This study presents current epidemiological data, pathomechanism theories, risk factors, symptoms and principles for monitoring and management of ethambutol – induced optic neuropathy.
