Epidemiological Analysis of Patients with Cataract Operated at the Department of Ophthalmology in Bydgoszcz in the Years 2015 and 2016

Summary: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world. The only effective treatment for cataract is surgical intervention. The aim of our study was retrospective analysis of some epidemiological features of patients who have been operated because of cataract at our department in the year 2015 and 2016.
Material and Methods: We analyzed and compared data of 358 consecutive patients operated in September and October 2015 (Group I) and 366 operated in September and October 2016 (Group II). All data derived from medical history files. We took into consideration place of living, gender, age, preoperative visual acuity, type of cataract, coexistence of eye and general diseases, surgical method and number of complications.
Results: 68.99% of patients in Group I and 71.31% of patients in Group II lived in towns. Women dominated in both Groups – they comprised 65.08% of Group I and 61.2% of Group II. The mean age of the patients was 71.68 ± 10.51 years in Group I and 71.9 ± 10.4 years in Group II. Women were operated in older age (mean 72.96 ± 9.36 in Group I and 72.33 ± 10.2 in Group II) than men (mean 69.28 ± 12.07 in Group I and 71.02 ± 10.61 in Group II). The mean preoperative visual acuity was 0.4 ± 0.32 in Group I and 0.41 ± 0.32 in Group II. The number of patients with low visual acuity (less than 0.1) was similar in both Groups and occurred 21.79% patients in Group I and 19.67% in Group II. Preoperative visual acuity 0.8 and better was found in 18% of patients in Group I and in 17% patients in Group II. 73.74% of patients in Group I and 68.85% patients in Group II suffered from systemic hypertension, 30.72% and 30.87% from diabetes. The most patients underwent cataract phacoemulsification – respectively 94.41% in Group I and 97.54% in Group II. We observed low ratio of intraoperative complications – 1.96% in Group I and 1.91% in Group II.
Conclusion: Medical history files of patients qualified for cataract surgery is relevant source of information. They gave a lot of epidemiological data and reported patients general condition.
