Summary: The macular pigment carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are the constituents of dietary supplements dedicated for the prevention of visual loss due to age-related macular degeneration and other ocular diseases. Significant amount of papers about carotenoids in ophthalmology has been published in recent years, including outcomes of large clinical trials. It seemed interesting to make a summary of discussion about application and effectiveness of lutein in the prophylaxis of age-related macular degeneration. There are strong evidences that lutein and other carotenoids increase total amount of macular pigments and thus may lower risk of age-related macular degeneration. Despite high hopes associated with lutein in age-related macular degeneration, there is still no guidance how to include it as the dietary support of therapy. The basic and clinical science is still insufficient. According to EFSA, daily dosage of 10.0 mg lutein and 2.0 mg zeaxanthin are recognized as safe.
