Summary: Corneal perforations are full-thickness holes in cornea, potentially leading to severe, permanent visual acuity impairment. Corneal perforations may result from infectious (bacterial, fungal, viral) or non-infectious neurotrophic keratitis, keratitis associated with autoimmunological diseases or connective tissue disorders accompanied by dry eye syndrome, also may result from external trauma (with sharp or blunt object, burns) or iatrogenic (corneal foreign body removal, eye surgery, topical eye drugs abuse). Management in corneal perforations depends on size and localization, corneal stroma involvement, pathogen. The aim of therapy is to maintain the integrity and anatomy of the eyeball. Treatment of the basic disease is crucial (intensive anti-infectious therapy, modification of current general therapy).
