Summary: Corneal collagen crosslinking was primarily introduced to stabilize the biomechanical properties of the corneal stroma in patients with corneal ectasia. The procedure creates stiffening effect on corneal stroma collagen increasing the resistance to enzymatic degradation. It has been used also in the treatment of a variety of corneal disorders e.g. symptomatic Fuchs dystrophy, pseudophakic bullous keratopathy and more recently infectious keratitis associated with corneal melting. In infectious keratitis, riboflavin acts as a photosensitizer is exposed to ultraviolet (UVA) irradiation. Microbial keratitis is a serious corneal infection, associated with a higher risk of corneal complications such as corneal melting and perforation. Cross-linking is an effective procedure in the management of microbial infections and may protect cornea from the damage caused by infection.
