Summary: Maintaining correct properties of cornea depends on the ability of the epithelial layer to continuously regenerate and respond properly to mechanical damage. Mechanisms of damage response lead to gene expression activating cell proliferation, migration and differentiation. Recent studies have suggested that miRNAs are one of the most important regulatory factors in the development and mechanisms of corneal epithelial renewal. The identification of miRNA involved in regenerative processes is important because it reveals potentially new therapeutic goals that can be used in clinical settings. In the near future, new drugs based on synthetic miRNAs that regulate signal pathways damaged in corneal diseases can be expected.
