Summary: Pterygium is a benign lesion usually growing from the nasal side of the conjunctiva onto the cornea. Histologically, it is composed of the head of the conjunctival epithelium and the hyperproliferative vessels along with the body of degenerated connective tissue. Several risk factors, which include heredity, ultra-violet light and chronic inflammation, contribute to pterygium development. Despite the pterygium being quite common, there are still many controversies regarding its etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment.
