Summary: Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is a condition in which the reduced amount of tear film abnormalities cause loss of its function, resulting in the appearance of inflammatory mediators leading to damage to the corneal and conjunctival epithelium. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca can be caused by a reduced amount of tears, improper composition or excessive evaporation. However, often one disease causes dysfunction of the tear film on several levels. The more advanced dry eye syndrome, the more frequent and heavier inflammation, leading to vision threatening corneal ulcers. Therefore, in patients with frequent keratoconjunctivitis sicca ophthalmologist should always consider intensification treatment of the dry eye syndrome.
