Summary: Current epidemiologic studies proves that Meibomian gland dysfunction is the most common cause of dry eye syndrome. Consequently, proceeding therapeutic methods for Meibomian gland dysfunction should be replaced by precise and modified therapy, adjusted to specific dry eye syndrome etiology. It is essential to follow the Meibomian gland dysfunction symptoms and stages while choosing any therapeutic options. Nowadays, new methods of thermotherapy, systemic and topical pharmacotherapy have been reported. However, it is strongly recommended to introduce Meibomian gland dysfunction therapy gradually according to treatment algorithm.
