Summary: Biomechanics uses the principles of mechanics to describe the properties of living structures such as tissues or organs.
Over the last 10 years, the rules of biomechanics have been used in ophthalmology to evaluate the viscoelastic properties of corneal tissue. The measurement of corneal hysteresis and new correction algorithms of intraocular pressure have been applied to the clinical practice together with the development of dynamic contour tonometry and dynamic bi-directional tonometry.
In the paper, practical use of corneal biomechanics as a modern diagnostic tool has been discussed. Assessment of biomechanical properties of the cornea plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma, detection of corneal ectasia, management of patients after corneal refractive surgery or keratoplasty and finally in corneal refractive therapy.
