Summary: Retinitis pigmentosa is the most common hereditary disorder of retina leading to blindness. The clinical symptoms of the disease include twilight blindness, degenerative changes in the hole, progressive narrowing of the visual field and loss of visual acuity. Currently, no effective causative treatment of the disease is available. The previous proceedings are based mainly on regular eye checks, the selection of optical aids for the visually impaired, visual rehabilitation and social assistance. Currently, scientists are able to propose newer methods of treatment that may slow down the progression of the disease in patients with early stage disease.
