Summary: Ocular surface disease is a group of disorders commonly seen in everyday ophthalmic practice. Dry eye disease is responsible for the majority of these disorders and according to recent data, it is estimated that it may affect up to 30% of people over 50 years of age. It is a multifactorial disease characterized by a loss of the tear film homeostasis. In the pathogenesis of the dry eye disease, the important role of both qualitative and quantitative disorders of the tear film is emphasized. It leads to the loss of its integrity and stability and, consequently, to visual disturbances, discomfort and damage of the ocular surface. The two basic forms of the dry eye disease are those related to the deficiency of the aqueous layer of the tear film and the form with excessive evaporation. There are many available tests in clinical practice used to diagnose dry eye disease. Multifunctional devices such as I.C.P. Ocular Surface Analyser are becoming more and more useful. It is an integrated system which enables a non-invasive, full assessment of the ocular surface. Due to the multifactorial nature of the dry eye syndrome, this device may be helpful in making the right diagnosis and applying appropriate treatment. The most important measurements include: non-invasive assessment of the tear film layers by measuring the tear meniscus height, tear film break-up time, lipid layer thickness (interferometry) and assessment of Meiboma glands. The obtained measurements can be compared and assigned according to the diagnostic evaluation scales.
The aim of this review is to present the I.C.P. Ocular Surface Analyser as a useful instrument in the diagnosis of the ocular surface disease.
