Summary: Retinopathy of prematurity is a vasoproliferative disease affecting premature infants. Currently, it is estimated that 10-15% of premature infants have diagnosed retinopathy. Retinopathy is thought to be the most common cause of congenital blindness in newborns. There are many risk factors that can lead to rise or worsening of local retinal infections in preterm infants.
Every year, in Poland approximately 300.000 children are born, about 6% of them are premature infants. We present the results of examination of premature infants who reported to the Eye Clinic for Children at UCK in Katowice in order to exclude the risk of retinopathy of prematurity. We examined 558 children born in 2017, of which 478 cases were premature infants. Retinopathy of prematurity was confirmed in 8.15 % of examined infants, the laser coagulation was done in 22 infants, it was 4.5 %.
