Summary: The canalization of the lacrimal duct does not always occur spontaneously in children.
The congenital obstruction of the lacrimal duct is a common ophthalmic pathology in the youngest patients. Treatment include conservative and invasive procedures.
The purpose of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of lacrimal duct probing in congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction in children in various ages.
Material and Methods: 1571 children of age between a few weeks to several years treated by probing in congenital unilateral or bilateral lacrimal duct obstruction, between 2010–2018 years.
Results: The lacrimal ducts have been opened up in all children (total 1783 ducts), under local or general anaesthesia.
Conclusions: The decision on timing of lacrimal duct probing is individual. It depends on the severity of symptoms of the disease and its chronicity, the determination of parents and the skills and experience of an ophthalmologist.
