Summary: Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension in children is a rare disease which diagnosis is made after excluding the secondary causes of increased intracranial pressure. The most common symptom of the disease is headache, while it clinically manifests as bilateral papilledema. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is more common in girls, typically overweight or obese.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present the case of a fourteen-year-old boy diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.
Material and methods: A 14-year-old boy hospitalized in the Children`s Ophthalmology Department of the 2nd Ophthalmology Clinic of the Medical University in Szczecin, who was diagnosed with Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension after multidisciplinary examinations.
Results: The patient from the interview presented the symptoms of visual impairment and headaches. During the first routine eye examination, symmetrical bilateral papilledema was diagnosed. After laboratory tests, including magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, after excluding secondary causes of intracranial hypertension, results of cerebrospinal fluid opening pressure and neurological and neurosurgical consultations, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension was diagnosed. Conservative treatment with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors was initiated, thanks to which the papiledema was partially relieved.
Conclusions: Diagnosis of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension is difficult and requires a multidisciplinary team consisting of an ophthalmologist, neurologist and neurosurgeon not only at the stage of diagnosis but also monitoring of the treatment. Making the right diagnosis and long-term medical care can contribute to inhibiting or slowing the progression of optic neuropathy and therefore reducing the likelihood of blindness.
