Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common disease of the central retina. Sometimes it is a reason of a rapid and severe loss of visual acuity determining the most frequent cause of legal blindness in adults over 50 years of age. There are also some other reasons of central vision loss, such as retinal dystrophies, other kinds of degeneration or vascular changes. All mentioned diseases give similar symptoms. Patients complain of some kind of distortion and dark spot in the centre of the visual field. Findings in retinal examination are as following: drusen, displacement of pigment, atrophy of pigment epithelium, sometimes even geographic atrophy, hard exudates, classic, occult or mixed neovascular membrane, hemorrhages, pigment epithelium detachment, detachment of the neurosensory layer of retina, fibrotic scar. Sometimes there are some problems with an exact interpretation of visible changes which leads to diagnostic mistakes. We would like to present the most common of them.
Keywords: subfoveal neovascularization, fluorescein angiography.
