Summary: Pars planitis is an idiopathic chronic intermediate uveitis characterized by inflammatory cellular infiltration over the pars plana and into the base of vitreous body and associated with only mild anterior segment inflammation. The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature working group has recommended that the term ?pars planitis? should be reserved for that subset of intermediate uveitis with snowbank or snowball formation in the absence of an associated infection or systemic disease. Pars planitis most commonly affects young individuals, between 5 and 40 years of age. The course of this condition can be complicated by cystoid macular edema, cataract, glaucoma, epiretinal membrane formation, retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage and retinal neovascularization. In the treatment of pars planitis topical and periocular steroid injections are the first choice. In severe cases, systemic steroids or immunosuppressive agents may be used, as well as cyclocryotherapy and vitrectomy.
