Summary: Introduction: The term penetrating injury refers to a transmural injury of the eyeball. The wound may be accompanied by the presence of an intraocular foreign body. Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to assess injury, and also methods and effectiveness of treatment. Materials and Methods: Methods: it is a retrospective analysis, evaluating information contained in case histories of 35 patients admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology Medical University of Łódź in the years 2004-2007. Results: Among all patients, men had an accident 5.8 times more frequently than women. The average age was: 40 ? 14 years. Accidents resulting in eyeballs? rupture (breaking of the eyeball?s continuity) happen most often during professional work performance (38.2%). Despite the common right-handedness of the human population, frequency of injuries of the right eye is equal to the frequency of injuries of the left eye. All patients who underwent examination had hypotony. 75.6% of patients had only one surgery. Eyeball evisceration was performed in case of 4 patients (11.8%). Enucleation surgery was performed in 2 patients (5.9%). Conclusions: Penetrating injury of the eyeball is a serious condition, requiring complex treatment procedures and associated with a poor prognosis. Men in working-age predominate among patients, the majority of traumas happened during work activities. Prognostic factors of the final visual acuity after penetrating trauma are: visual acuity on admission and number of required surgical procedures.
