Summary: Accurate diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is required for appropriate qualification for the treatment. There are some useful simple subjective techniques but a numerous of diagnostic methods utilize advanced and complicated technology. Fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and optical coherent tomography (OCT) are presumed as the most essential in AMD evaluation. FA allows for detection of CNV and for taking a decision of PDT application. All of these methods are useful in qualification for PDT re-treatment. ICGA is a valuable tool in assessment of occult CNV, OCT helps to differentiate leakage from CNV and fibrovascular tissue staining. There are some new methods used for AMD evaluation. Multifocal electroretinography provides good information of central retinal function. It allows objectively monitoring retinal function changes after PDT treatment. Preferential Hyperacuity Perimetry (PHP) helps to quantify macular lesions and to evaluate metamorphopsia. It uses a dot visual signal (hiperacuity stimuli) for quantification of a macular area function. Currently used diagnostic methods commonly utilize digital electronics technology which allow to share and discuss difficult cases among medical community located even worldwide. With advance of new modern treatment modalities, new diagnostic tests especially those which allow for early diagnosis and those which have a good correlation with quality of patient life are needed.
