Summary: Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of Heidelberg retinal flowmeter (HRF) for retinal microcirculation in glaucoma. Material and methods: Forty-six patients with glaucoma (22 with POAG and 24 with NTG) and 16 healthy volunteers were examined in the years 2000 ? 2002. Diagnosis of glaucoma was based on typical criteria. The inclusion criteria were following: only medical therapy, no other ocular changes, refraction errors no higher than 4,0 D, no systemic diseases, except hypertension in normalized phase. In every case the HRF examination was done by the author of the paper under the same conditions. The measurement was performed in the nasal and temporal peripapillary areas. The results were calculated using AFFPIA program. Results: No significant differences were found between the glaucomatous patients and healthy persons as well as between the POAG and NTG. Statistical analysis based on median values of the flow revealed significant differences in the flow depending on the changes of optic disc and beta-blockers therapy. Conclusions: The examination of retinal microcirculation with HRF technique is not useful in everyday clinical evaluation of glaucomatous damage. However this technique may be suitable in the assessment of the retinal flow changes caused by medical therapy, also in glaucoma.
