Early complications of cataract surgery

Summary: Taking into account that cataract surgery is more often performed as a one day surgery ophthalmologists in outpatient clinics should focus to look for any potential early postoperative complications. In practice, eye examination just after surgery is difficult to perform. However, comprehensive examination allows to later avoid many complications development. Majority of the early postoperative complications are transient and self-limiting e. g. abnormal function of lids, ocular muscles paresis, squint and binocular diplopia, conjunctival haemorrhage. Additional surgical procedures as well as fortified pharmacological treatment therefore are not needed. Some significant problems for the convalescent period may be present later on the day of surgery e. g. corneal abrasion, raised intraocular pressure, leaking wound and suprachoroidal haemorrhage. Special attention should be paid on the routine use of viscoelastic substances and blood-aqueous barrier breakdown. The most often postoperative complications present within first week after surgery are: uveitis and endophthalmitis, glaucoma, corneal oedema. Preoperative prevention and efficient treatment of postoperative complications are the relevant factors of straightforward recovery and results of the present cataract surgery.
