Summary: This article describes surgical methods for resecting uveal melanomas, emphasizing the occurence of intraoperative as well as early and late postoperative complications. Based on literature and our own experiences the most common intraoperative complications associated with surgical management of intraocular melanoma include: vitreous outflow, subretinal, intravitreal and anterior chamber haemorrhages, retinal detachment. The most common early postoperative complications are: intraocular haemorrhages, retinal detachment, macular edema, hypotony and secondary glaucoma. Late postoperative complications include: macular edema, hypotony and cataract formation, and rare ptosis, keratopathy, posterior synechiae, iris rubeosis and choroidal detachment. Among late postoperative complications residual tumor reccurences are also discussed.
