Summary: Phototherapy has been known since antiquity, but it has become center of interest of experimental and clinical research at the beginning of the 20th century. The turning point in phototherapy were studies on porphyria. Bruce and Tse published their pioneer works about phototherapy with hematoporphyrin in ocular tumors in 1984. At present in ocular oncology photodynamic therapy with verteporfin and indocyanine green mediated phototherapy are used in management of selected cases of intraocular tumors. Both methods are based on selective occlusion of tumors intrinsic vasculature as a result of photosensitizers activation (verteporfin and indocyanine green dye) with low energy laser. We are going to present the overview of the literature and our own results of therapy of some cases of choroidal melanomas and choroidal haemangiomas with both of these methods.
Keywords: photochemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, indocyanine green mediated photothrombosis, intraocular tumors.
