Summary: Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP)
examinations were performed in 36 children with
myelomeningocele (age range: 1-52 weeks). The flash
stimulation with frequency of 1 Hz was used.
The aim of the study was to determine, whether
myelomeningocele causes disturbances in the visual
pathway, which can be observed with the VEP use.
Results: In 69.3% of children transmission in the
visual pathway was disturbed (in 58.3% of cases it was
greatly disturbed). 36.1% of the VEP results were within
the normal ranges.
Our results show, that myelomeningocele may cause
disturbances of the CNS function in regions with no
anatomical changes.
Keywords: visual evoked potentials, myelomeningocele, P100 latency, visual pathways.
