A case of unilateral optic neuritis in 17-year old boy in a course of multiple sclerosis

Summary: Multiple sclerosis (MS) in children and adolescents is rather rare disease. Optic neuritis is a common symptom of MS. We described a 17-year old boy with sudden loss of vision in left eye. On examination, visual acuity was 5/5 in the right eye and light perception in the left eye. Fundus examination was normal. MRI revealed multiple lesions in central nervous system and in the left optic nerve. Abnormal VEP typical for MS was observed. He was given methylprednisolone, but there was only minimal improvement of visual acuity (to counting fingers from 3 m). Two months later the optic nerve atrophy of the left eye was noticed.
