Patients Qualification for Cataract Extraction Surgery

Summary: Cataract is one of the major causes of blindness throughout the world. None of the factors like gender, race or ethnic group protect against age related lens opacification. Surgical procedures for restoring vision reduced due to cataract are distinguished by high effectiveness. Visual acuity of 5/10 or better occurs in greater than 90% of the operated patients. Intra- and postoperative complications have negative impact on final result. At least some of them can be prevented. To make the surgery safer and more effective, the thorough preoperative examination and proper qualification for the specific procedure is essential. Preoperative evaluation should start with the patient?s medical history including previous and current medicines, illnesses, past surgeries. Next basic step is visual acuity testing (with near vision and glare testing). Slit- lamp evaluation of each part of the anterior segment of the eye and funduscopy are the main part of the examination. When evaluating the patient before cataract surgery, additional special tests like US, endothelial cell count, pachymetry and perimetry are often needed to be taken. As it is shown in the article, qualification to cataract surgery requires holistic approach to patient. After all, the burden of responsibility is borne by a surgeon who has to consider his own experience and skills. The chance of success is enhanced only when knowledge and experience is put together.
