Summary: The optic nerve shows histological similarity with white matter of the brain. Optic nerve neuropathies lead to irreversible visual impairment. The most common of them, glaucomatous neuropathy is the second cause of legal blindness in the world. Axonal damage is so far not amenable to treatment and in most cases optic nerve neuropathies have progressive course leading to optic nerve atrophy. The concept of neuroprotection, originally referred to neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system, means to protect intact neuronal fiber from secondary degeneration, what should limit the disease progression. Although there are many substances with neuroprotective properties proved in animal models, it has not been confirmed in clinical trials yet. Investigating neuroprotection enlarge understanding of nature of primary mechanisms, giving hope for casual treatment.
