Summary: Filamentary keratitis is a chronic ocular disorder manifested by the presence of filiform filaments fixed to the corneal surface. Mechanism of epithelial-mucosal filaments formation is still not fully known, although there are several theories about their creation. Conditions associated with filamentary keratitis occurrence include dry eye syndrome (the most common) and corneal inflammation, surgery, prolonged closure of the palpebral fissure, contact lens use. Filamentary keratitis treatment include topical application of preservatives-free moisturizing eye-drops, hyperosmotics, steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, botulinum toxin injections and oculoplastic surgery. Therapy is usually long-lasting.
